What Is MessCtrl

MessCtrl is a floating command palette and tool panel for Adobe After Effects. It has two parts:

• Command Bar - a floating window you open with a keyboard shortcut. Type to instantly search effects, expressions, presets, and layer commands. Chain multiple actions together and execute them all with one keystroke.
• AE Panel - a dockable panel inside After Effects with all tools organized into collapsible sections: Anchor Grid, Easer, Sequence Layers, Colors, Layer Tagger, Expressions, Text FX, Wire Layers, Auto-Grid, MC Scripts, and more.

Both parts work together. The panel lives inside After Effects; the command bar runs as a lightweight background app that connects automatically when AE is open.

System Requirements

Tested on: After Effects 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026.

Installation

1. 1Download MessCtrl_Setup.exe from your purchase confirmation email or your Gumroad library.
2. 2Run the installer. No admin rights required. The process takes about 10 seconds.
3. 3Restart After Effects - required for the panel to appear in the Extensions menu.
4. 4In After Effects: Edit → Preferences → Scripting & Expressions, then enable "Allow Scripts to Write Files and Access Network". This is required for the panel to communicate with After Effects.
5. 5Open the panel: Window → Extensions → MessCtrl Bridge. Dock it anywhere - it doesn't need to be visible to work.
6. 6Press Ctrl+Space to open the command bar. The activation screen will appear on first use.

Activation & Licensing

What's included

• One license key per purchase
• Up to 10 activations - use it on your home machine, studio workstation, laptop, etc.
• Personal use license - one person, not for team or shared use
• All v1.x updates included

How to activate

1. 1Open After Effects and the MessCtrl Bridge panel.
2. 2Enter your license key in the format XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX and click Activate License.
3. 3MessCtrl verifies the key with Gumroad. On success, the panel unlocks immediately.

An internet connection is required for activation. After that, MessCtrl works fully offline.

Offline use

MessCtrl re-verifies your license silently in the background each time you open AE. You don't need to do anything.

Deactivating

To free up an activation slot before reinstalling or switching computers:

1. 1Open the MessCtrl Bridge panel.
2. 2Click the gear icon, then scroll to the License section.
3. 3Click Deactivate on this machine and confirm.

Each reactivation uses one slot from your 10.

Activation limit reached

If you've used all 10 activations, email support@idoharti.com with your license key and we'll reset your count manually.

Refunds

If you request a refund through Gumroad, your license is automatically invalidated. MessCtrl will stop working at the next background verification (within 7 days).

Feature Reference

Command Bar

Press Ctrl+Space (customizable) to open the floating command bar at your cursor. Start typing to search across all installed effects, expression presets, layer commands, comps, and scripts at once.

• 34+ built-in commands ready to use
• Third-party plugin effects - Red Giant, Boris FX, Video Copilot, and others appear in results automatically
• Pin bar - right-click any result and pin it for one-click access at the top of the bar
• Browse mode - press the down arrow with an empty search field to scroll through the full library

Command Chaining

Press + or , after any item to queue it. Keep adding, then press Enter to run everything at once.

Examples

Queued items appear as chips in the chain bar. Backspace removes the last one.

Asset Library

Press Tab while the command bar is open to switch to Assets mode. Browse and import content from any .aep file without ever opening it in After Effects.

• Search across all items in the loaded project by typing in the search field
• Browse by type: Compositions, Video Footage, and Images are listed in separate groups
• Click any item to import it directly into your active project - no need to import the whole file
• Star any item to save it to your Favorites for instant access next session

Import tab

Click Add new AEP file to load a project. Its full contents appear grouped by type. Import any individual comp, footage clip, or image into your current project with a single click.

Favorites tab

All starred items from all loaded projects appear here. Stars are saved between sessions, so your most-used assets are always one tab away.

Anchor Grid

A 3x3 grid (9 positions) that moves the anchor point of selected layers to any corner, edge, or center position instantly, on multiple layers at once. The layer's position is automatically adjusted so nothing jumps in the comp. Works with keyframed position and separated X/Y dimensions.

Easer

Apply easing to selected keyframes without touching the graph editor. Choose from five presets (Linear, Ease, Ease In, Ease Out, Smooth) or dial in custom In/Out values with sliders (0 to 100). Copy easing from one keyframe and paste it to any number of others - across multiple layers - in one click.

Sequence Layers

Stagger layers or keyframes in time with repeatable, precise control.

Colors

Apply solid colors or multi-stop gradients to selected layers with one click. Changes the actual visible color in the comp, not just the timeline label. A dedicated editor window lets you build swatches and gradients and manage them across palette groups.

Solid colors

• Three palette groups (A, B, C) to keep project, client, and personal swatches separate
• Full color picker with hex input
• Sample any color directly from a layer in the comp
• Recent colors always visible (last 5)
• Works on solids, text, shapes, and precomps

Gradient editor

• Up to 5 color stops with a live gradient preview
• 2 stops apply as a Ramp effect. 3 to 5 stops apply as CC Toner - chosen automatically
• Each stop is fully editable: drag to reposition, click to change color

Import palettes

Load colors directly from files you already have:

• Import from Photoshop (.aco or .ase) - loads all swatches from the file into the active palette group
• Import from Illustrator (.ase) - same process, works with any ASE swatch library

Layer Tagger

Tag layers with labels and instantly select all layers sharing a tag. Tags survive file saves and project re-opens.

Seven built-in tags with individual colors: Hero, BG, FX, UI, Audio, Guide, Temp. Add custom tags for anything else.

• Click a tag to apply it to all selected layers
• Click a tag chip to select all layers carrying that tag in the current comp
• Right-click a chip to remove that tag from all layers in the comp

Snapshot

• Export Frame - saves the current frame as a PNG next to your project file. No render queue needed.
• Paste Clipboard - imports an image from your clipboard directly into the active comp as footage.

Expressions

All expressions are controlled by sliders in the Effect Controls panel - no code editing required.

Text FX

Ready-to-use text animator presets applied directly to your text layers: Typewriter, Fade Up, Pop In, Tracking Expand, Slide In, Glitch, Counter, Decode Reveal, Blinking Cursor.

Also includes Text Box - creates a text layer with a background shape that automatically resizes to fit the text. Padding is controlled by sliders.

Wire Layers

Select any layers and create a live shape layer that connects their anchor points with lines. Lines update automatically as layers move.

• Chain mode - connects layers in sequence: 1 to 2 to 3 and so on
• Hub mode - connects all layers back to the first one, like spokes on a wheel

Stroke width, color, bezier curve amount, and path close are all adjustable from sliders on the shape layer.

Auto-Grid

Arranges selected layers into a grid with configurable columns and spacing. Creates a Grid Controller null with animatable Reveal and Hide sliders.

MC Scripts

More powerful tools for building rigs, restructuring projects, or automating multi-step workflows.

Quick Actions

A configurable strip of one-click buttons at the top of the panel for actions you run constantly.

• Show, hide, and reorder buttons from the gear icon
• Built-in buttons: Null (parents all selected layers to a new spanning null), Anchor Center, Flip H, Flip V, Stagger, Precomp
• Right-click any expression or tool elsewhere in the panel to pin it to Quick Actions

Notes

A persistent scratch pad inside the panel. Write anything - directions for a client handoff, a checklist of shots to finish, reference text to paste. Always there when you have the panel open.

• Add as many notes as you need - text notes or checklists
• Drag to reorder notes within the section
• RTL toggle per note for Hebrew, Arabic, and other right-to-left languages
• Checklist keyboard shortcuts: Enter adds a new item below, Backspace on an empty item removes it
• Font size control (A− / A+) adjusts all note text at once - useful if you're working at a distance
• Right-click any note for quick actions: duplicate, move to top or bottom, delete
• Notes persist across sessions

Changing the shortcut

The Ctrl+Space shortcut is customizable. To change it:

1. 1Open the MessCtrl Bridge panel.
2. 2Click the gear icon, then go to the Keyboard Shortcut section.
3. 3Click the shortcut field and press your new key combination.

Privacy Policy

What we collect

Crash reports: When MessCtrl encounters an unexpected error, an anonymous crash report is sent to Sentry. These reports contain the error message, MessCtrl version, and OS version - nothing else. They do not include your name, email, IP address, file paths, or any content from your projects.

You can opt out by blocking MessCtrl's internet access in your firewall.

License verification: When you activate or re-verify a license, your license key is sent to Gumroad's API to confirm it's valid. Gumroad returns your purchase email, which is stored in an encrypted file on your computer. No personal data is sent to mess.tools servers.

What is stored on your computer

• License file (encrypted): your license key, purchase email, and last-verified date
• Settings file: your keyboard shortcut, pinned tools, color palettes, and panel preferences

These files never leave your computer. The only data that leaves is your license key (sent to Gumroad for verification) and anonymous crash reports (sent to Sentry).

Third-party services

Your rights (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area, you have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your personal data, and to withdraw consent at any time. Email support@idoharti.com and we will respond within 30 days.

Data retention

• Crash reports are retained by Sentry for 90 days
• Local files persist until you uninstall MessCtrl or delete them manually
• Gumroad retains purchase records per their own policy

By purchasing or using MessCtrl, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the software.

License

Purchasing MessCtrl grants you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive license to install and use the software for your own work, subject to these terms.

You may:

• Install MessCtrl on computers you personally own or operate (up to 10 activations per key)
• Use it in personal, freelance, or commercial work
• Use it for educational purposes

You may not:

• Share, sell, or transfer your license key to anyone else
• Install on computers owned or operated by others, or on shared team systems
• Redistribute, resell, or sublicense the software
• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code
• Circumvent or interfere with the license verification system

Updates

All v1.x updates are included with your license. Future major versions (v2.0 and above) may require a separate purchase. mess.tools reserves the right to modify this policy with reasonable notice.

Limitation of liability

Refunds

Refunds are available within 30 days of purchase if MessCtrl does not work as described on your system. Email support@idoharti.com before requesting a refund through Gumroad — most issues can be resolved quickly.

Termination

Your license is automatically revoked if you request a refund or materially violate these terms. Upon termination you must stop using the software and uninstall it.

Governing law

These terms are governed by applicable law. Disputes will be resolved through good-faith negotiation first. If unresolved, they will be submitted to a court of competent jurisdiction.

• MessCtrl version (shown in the bottom-right corner of the panel)

If you can't activate, hit your activation limit, or need a reset, email support@idoharti.com with your license key. Put "Activation Reset" in the subject line.
